Tailwalk Hi-Tide SSD 96M

The 96M within this Hi-Tide range is an impressive rod for sure.

It's rated at 42g, which is just a rating that I love. From a North Coast perspective it gives us just that little bit of extra power that sometimes we might need. Not every day of the week, but should the wind get up or the swell get up, having that extra little bit of power in the tank means you can always cope with the conditions should they gradually get worse. What we find more often than not is that actually the fish are there when it's rough, so a rod like this is a very commonly considered option.

A lot of that extra rating it has over the likes of the 35g 90ML isn't necessarily in the tip. It's more so in the butt. So you still have the lightness in the tip that you might sometimes need for fishing soft plastics, but then the extra power should you need to blast out a metal or something like that. This shouldn't be considered a powerful stiff rod. It's fast and responsive, but it's not stiff and steely, so it's actually a surprisingly delicate all-rounder that certainly has that power when you need it.

The extra length means distance can certainly be improved, but it does more than that. It means you can stand above the water a little bit more safely, whilst also being able to keep the tip down and keep the line nearer the water, which is super important especially when you've got a little bit of a breeze blowing. In the surf it's the opposite: you can keep the line up and off the waves, or at least it gives you the movement to be able to move the rod and the line around. That's the case as well when we're fishing some of the rock marks, where sometimes a longer rod can be useful for guiding fish around certain little obstacles close to you.
