Tailwalk Hi-Tide SSD 88ML-P5

It's become increasingly rare over the years to find travel rods within the Japanese ranges, at least until the last couple of years anyway. Tailwalk bringing out the 88ML-P5 is one of the greatest things they could have done for us, to be honest. So rare is it to find a genuine Japanese-style travel rod that I'd been waiting a long time for one.

Being a five-piece, this one packs down into what is a really small bag, considering it's actually a really professional quality bass fishing rod. 8'8" has almost become the new cool length for bass rods and this is exactly that. The action and the fact that it's rated at 35g mean it's going to fish all of your normal bass lures lovely and easily, everything from a 10g unweighted plastic all the way up to a 30 or 35g metal even.

As with all travel rods, the extra joins do mean it's not quite as crisp or as responsive as the two-piece 86 or 90 in this range. But what makes this one so impressive is how close it gets, given the massively increased convenience of travelling with it. Extra joins always give a slightly softer action throughout, so it's not a super fast, super steely rod. Even so, it's right up there as a very good bass rod regardless of the fact that it's five-piece, and even if it was two-piece it would still compare very favourably with so many other rods.

They come supplied in a nylon case. It's a slightly interesting layout, but they've managed to get the five sections in there without them crushing each other, which is great. Again with the SSD styling, it's just a great rod to look at, and the handle is very comfortable and really lovely to fish with.

Just a great buy if you're ever travelling anywhere really, and that doesn't have to be limited to bass fishing.
