Tailwalk Crimson S82ML-F

I love this rod and it's often vying to be my favourite pick from within this range. I've used the 83 a lot more in reality, but now that a lot of us are starting to fish a little bit lighter again, especially in our estuaries, the 82 is the rod within that range that just perfectly suits that style of fishing. Whether you're fishing soft plastics, light topwater lures or anything like that, it's just a lovely light rod.

This and the 83 can look quite similar on paper. The 82 has a 28g maximum rating, the 83 has 35g, and there's only an inch difference between their lengths. In reality the difference we find is that the 82 has a slightly lower grade of carbon within the tip section. That's intentional, to ensure it's actually a little bit more glassy and a little bit more elastic than the 83. It's slightly easier to bend and slightly more forgiving when you're playing fish, so for fishing with lighter lures and things like that it's just perhaps the better choice of the two.

Realistically it will cast a 28g metal, but I'd say it's going to come into its own when you're fishing lures up to about 20g. So not a rod for fishing out on the open coast in rough seas, but absolutely one for the estuaries, sheltered bays, or just generally calmer days where you're fishing lighter lures.

The Crimsons generally are quite unique for us in that they're one of very, very few Japanese lure rod ranges that actually gives us that crisp steeliness that so many people really like these days. So many are so elastic and so forgiving, for lots of very good reasons. They've got a cork grip as well, something we don't see on many rods. There's no right or wrong with a lot of this and it does come down to preferences, but cork is one that I personally love, and it gives the guys that do love it an option. Beautiful quality blanks, lovely balance, Fuji SiCs, all good components.
