For the money they cover, the NS rods are the best value I've seen, and this is the one I'd point most people at. The Hurricane-Z sits a step above the Dark Horse II, built with a higher grade of carbon, and it has a crispness and a lightness I'd normally expect from rods costing twice as much. At 8'6" it's bang on what's become our all-round length, capable on the open coast and just as happy in the estuary, which is the one-rod-does-everything job most people are actually after. The tip is finer than the rating would suggest, so it fishes like a much lighter rod, but the power is still all there in the butt for punching a lure into a bit of wind or landing a decent fish. On the rating, read the top end as a metal figure rather than something to hang a big plastic shad off. Look at it as a 30g-plus rod and it's about as capable a lightweight bass rod as you'll find at the money.
