About this rod

The Black Pearl Maxx series covers everything from lighter freshwater fishing through to heavier bass fishing, with travel rods in there as well. The slightly longer grip and sensibly sized guides make these feel very practical, while the ergonomic grip sits really nicely in the hand.

Picking this one up alongside the lighter model, my first impressions are actually really good. I almost prefer it, which is rare. That extra stiffness just tightens the whole thing up a tiny bit.

For anybody fishing big shads, metals and plugs, or fishing rougher ground where they don't want to faff about, this feels like an absolutely awesome rod. It's incredibly solid, really, really well made and feels such good quality. Made in Germany rather than Asia, it's hard to fault.

Fittings: a blank of Japanese high modulus carbon, nine KW, KL and KT style SiC guides, a TVS or ACS style reel seat, an EVA Duplon split handle and a Seaguide D-hook keeper.

About Sportex

It's not often we get to sell rods that are made outside Asia, so Sportex are a really interesting brand for me. I wasn't sure what to expect before our first batch arrived, so I was fairly careful, but it turns out I didn't really need to be. The build on them is just brilliant. They feel so solid, and that doesn't mean heavy at all. They're physically very light rods that also feel very robust.
