Squid

Squid fishing is something that I've personally never done lots of, but at certain times of the year, especially on our south coast here in Cornwall, the squid come in en masse. Harbours and breakwaters are especially popular places to catch them, providing easy access, fun fishing and a tasty dinner. They're obviously ideal for filling up a bait freezer too.

How to choose a squid rod

Action

Squid rods have a slightly different action to bass rods. They can have fast tips, but then a slow taper through the middle length of the rod. It is not just about having a really quick tip.

The rod needs to bend to absorb the way soft squid fight. That is why sensitivity and lifting power have to sit alongside one another. Squid rods can often be lighter in weight than equivalent bass rods, but still need enough lifting power for the job.

Where the rod loads matters too. It will depend on the design and length, and needs to be in the right place for the rod to work properly. Get that wrong and it becomes very difficult to coordinate the technique.

Choosing one

Squid rods are technical rods, really. Like any rod when it is trying to do something technical, I can imagine a budget version has to give something up somewhere. That can be casting distance or the way the rod responds in use.
