Squid

Squid fishing is something that I've personally never done lots of, but at certain times of the year, especially on our south coast here in Cornwall, the squid come in en masse. Harbours and breakwaters are especially popular places to catch them, providing easy access, fun fishing and a tasty dinner. They're obviously ideal for filling up a bait freezer too.

Action

Squid rods have an action a little different to our bass rods. They can have fast tips, but then have a slower taper through the middle length of the rod. The rod needs to bend to absorb the way the soft squid fight. It is a fairly technical balance really, as it still needs enough lifting power without feeling overly heavy.

Length and feel

Where the load point sits depends on the rod's design and its length. This is the point where the rod stops bending under weight and starts delivering action through it, so it needs to sit in the right place for the rod to feel coordinated.

Squid rods can often be lighter in weight than equivalent bass rods. That lighter feel is a big part of what makes them nice to use.

Budget

Like any rods, especially when they're trying to get technical, there can be compromises at the budget end. Casting distance can be one of them.
