Thinking about Spool Capacity

Spool capacity is how much line the reel holds, usually printed as line diameter against length, for example 0.20mm/150m. For braid it's often given as a PE rating instead. Most people need less line than they think: for shore lure fishing, 150m of braid covers the vast majority of situations.

The practical question is matching spool depth to the thin braids lure fishing uses. A deep spool filled with fine braid either wastes money on line you'll never see or needs backing wound on first to fill it out. Shallow spool versions exist for exactly this reason, and they're usually the sensible choice for a dedicated lure reel.

An underfilled spool costs you casting distance, so whichever way you go, the spool wants filling close to the lip. If you buy line and a reel from us together, we're happy to advise on what will fill what.
