Understanding Reel Sizes

Spinning reel sizes are written as numbers like 1000, 2500, 4000. Bigger number, bigger reel: more line capacity, a larger spool, more weight. The catch is that the numbering isn't standardised, so one brand's 3000 can be close to another brand's 2500 in real size. Treat the number as a guide within a brand rather than an absolute measurement.

As a rough shape for lure fishing: 1000 to 2000 sizes suit LRF and light estuary work, 2500 to 3000 covers most UK bass fishing, and 4000 and up starts to make sense for heavier shore work or boat fishing. The right size is mostly about balancing the rod it's going on and holding enough of the line you actually fish.

If you're matching a reel to a rod you bought from us, get in touch and we'll tell you what we'd pair with it.
