Something a bit different from Team AOFs Tom Baron.
During the spell of scorching weather we have been having he switched it up and hit his local rivers.
“I recently headed up to a small West Country river in the search of chub and perch with the ultralight lure tackle. Armed with a selection of Sub 60mm surface lures I targeted the slacks on the far bank aiming to precisely flick my surface lures under the foliage mimicking a small insect that had fallen from the bushes above, just letting it naturally drift downstream while imparting the odd micro flick every now and again to draw the attention of any chub.
Didn’t take long to find some chub resulting in loads of fish around the 2-3lb mark, which fight incredibly well on the light tackle! Even missed a huge trout which completely cleared the water after grabbing my surface lure!
Using my polarized glasses I was happy to spot the occasional “decent sized” perch swimming around in the deeper pools, I quickly switched to an Ecogear Grass Minnow 3.25” on a 3.5g jig head and dropped the lure right on its nose, absolutely no interest at first but after imparting some pretty erratic movements into the lure I aggravated the perch enough for it to strike! This resulted in a stunning perch of 38cm and shortly followed by another fish of 39cm.. Although not massive I will happily take that result considering they were both sight fished out a small river no wider then 12ft with average depth of 2ft.
A nice change to the fishing I have been doing recently and super cool healthy venue absolutely buzzing with life above and below the surface.”
