Tailwalk
Hi-Tide SSD
The Tailwalk Hi-Tide SSD series of bass rods has long been one of our own shop favourites, standing above all others in the £200 price bracket. No-frills yet classy design mixed with a beautiful versatile blank construction means the rods are not only great to look at but fish beautifully too. The range covers almost anything a UK land-based bass angler might wat to throw at them, with the 86ML excelling as an estuary rod, the 90ML as a standard all-rounder, and the 88M-P5 as a quality bass fishing travel rod. They’re a serious range that punches well above their price tag.
What do we think?
Ben SaysRod Blanks
Whether you are an experienced angler or one learning the ropes, the way the SSD rods bend makes them both sensitive and easy to use – no matter what your skill-set – and it’s here that they excel over many other rods available today. They’re not stiff like some modern rods are designed to be. They’re responsive when you need them to be, but also easy to bend when you want them to – without being soft. They’re just quite a clever design really and manage to compare different features all in one rod – a rarity in this price point.
Ben SaysReel Seat & Grips
The Hi-Tide SSD range features EVA grips throughout, with solid metal rings within some of the cosmetic features around the reel seat. The grip and handle design as a whole are about as universally appealing as lure rod design can achieve. There’s not much to like about the design, layout and comfort of these rods.
Ben SaysGuide Information
The guides (being all-Fuji) are about as good as you can get in this price range. The strong stainless frames and SiC insert are a robust option designed for both performance and durability. Most of the models carry single leg guides for lightness, but the MH models have double-leg guides in the larger sizes for further robustness – which goes hand-in-hand with them being models designed for heavier lures. Most models in the range have the single leg guides throughout, while the MH models use a double leg bottom guide for robustness – which compliments the slight step up in power.
Ben SaysFinishing Touches
The finish and decals of the Hi-Tide range are – like so much about this series – going to appeal to many! Simple black and silver graphics are classy and well thought out.
Tailwalk have grown to become one of the UK’s most respected Japanese tackle manufacturers. Known here mostly for their high quality, good value lure rods, the brand has many fans across all disciplines of lure fishing. What differentiates them from other brands is their diversity and suitability to a UK lure fishing scene that is not specifically Japanese in its inspiration.
