The 842 carries the higher rating of the pair, and that extra power sits almost entirely in the butt. Tip diameters are much the same across the two, so what you actually feel is a shorter, crisper, more responsive rod, a bit steelier for want of a better word, with a faster action than the 862. A lot of people pick a rod up in the shop wanting exactly that. It means it'll take a larger surface lure, and it's a lovely rod with a plug or a shad if you're fishing rougher conditions. The tip end still isn't stiff though, so unweighted soft plastics are well within it.
