We do not often need a long rod for bass in this country, but there are days on the rocks and in the surf where you do, and long rods are usually unwieldy. These get around that. Every model is three pieces with a put-in tip rather than a spigot or a put-over join, and on the 102 you can feel exactly what that does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tip is light, about what you would expect on a normal nine-foot bass rod, and then the power steps up hard through the middle section and again into the butt. It is rated to 35g and the tip reads about right for that, but the back half of the rod would cast 50g of metal without complaining. That is the whole point of it: enough feel to fish a light lure in rough water, and the power arriving the moment you hook something. For the guys I know that either fish very rough conditions here, or occasionally do travel to the likes of the Portuguese coastline for the big bass that live there, this rod is just so perfect it's unbelievable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are numerous rods within this range: the 102, the shortest and lightest; the 108, which is this one and perhaps the more usable, nice all-rounder; and the 112. Between them they cover so much. Heavy coast, heavy bass, heavy lure type of fishing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey're designed for rough seas, but from a travelling perspective the fact that it's three-piece means it's obviously a bit more compact. As it turns out, this three-piece makeup gives it technical benefits as well, because like the 102, this one has the put-in tip section to it. This means you get a level of softness or lightness within the tip that can then kick in more quickly into the power, into the middle and the butt section. This one is just a slightly stepped up power model over the 102.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's rated to cast up to 45g and you'd think that would be underestimated in reality. The tip section is quite comparable to your normal 45g bass rod, just having that little bit of extra power to it and being a nice heavier all-round bass tip. What's different about these is that when it kicks into that middle section with the put-in joint and then into the butt further, you're just getting progressively more and more power down the rod. I feel like honestly you could probably fish 60g on it without too much stress. I can't realistically tell you to do that, because it's been given a 45g rating by Tailwalk for whatever reason, but it is a powerful rod, not easily comparable to a normal 45g rated bass rod.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnybody that's done a lot of bass fishing locally especially will know that the rougher the sea gets, the more the bass are turned on by it. There are certainly scenarios in the UK where it'll just be perfect as well, situations actually where I often haven't bothered fishing because the seas can just look too rough at times. This is the biggest in the Surflat range, an 11'2\" three-piece rated from 15 to 55g.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's going to be way more of a brute than most people are ever going to need, but it's also one that's really going to suit rough conditions, especially as we draw into autumn and winter, where you might be fishing a big shad or a big needlefish, or a metal as well obviously, and just wanting to blast it as far as you can. Not a rod that's necessarily going to be designed or wanted for sort of delicate twitching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt comes into its own because of the fact that it's actually three-piece, which is a bit odd in a way, but it makes the rod what it is. It starts with the tip, which has a put-in joint on this one. The tip pushes into the second, and you then have a normal spigot put-over type thing connecting the third. There's a good reason for why they've done it two different ways within the same rod. It enables the tip section to be a little bit lighter. It's rated at 55g so it's not soft and flimsy at all, but it enables it to still be a very usable fishing rod without just being a massive long poker sort of thing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think it'll also really suit the guys that are travelling to places like Portugal, where you might be fishing big lures in rough conditions and just wanting that bit of extra distance and reach around obstacles close in as well, especially when you're stood a little bit up the rocks trying to get out of the way.
