From the shore it comes into its own at closer range where you need the power rather than the distance: hauling a fish out of the weed in an estuary, or wrasse fishing when you know there are big ones in front of you. The blanks in this range are responsive enough that bottom contact is always excellent, which matters for that sort of fishing. The rating takes in a wide spread of the larger lures, hard or soft. Like the 88MH it gets double-leg guides down towards the butt, so it's a more solid build than the rest of the range, and it's still a light rod in the hand. Whether you're fishing soft plastics, light topwater lures or anything like that, it's just a lovely light rod.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis and the 83 can look quite similar on paper. The 82 has a 28g maximum rating, the 83 has 35g, and there's only an inch difference between their lengths. In reality the difference we find is that the 82 has a slightly lower grade of carbon within the tip section. That's intentional, to ensure it's actually a little bit more glassy and a little bit more elastic than the 83. It's slightly easier to bend and slightly more forgiving when you're playing fish, so for fishing with lighter lures and things like that it's just perhaps the better choice of the two.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRealistically it will cast a 28g metal, but I'd say it's going to come into its own when you're fishing lures up to about 20g. So not a rod for fishing out on the open coast in rough seas, but absolutely one for the estuaries, sheltered bays, or just generally calmer days where you're fishing lighter lures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Crimsons generally are quite unique for us in that they're one of very, very few Japanese lure rod ranges that actually gives us that crisp steeliness that so many people really like these days. So many are so elastic and so forgiving, for lots of very good reasons. They've got a cork grip as well, something we don't see on many rods. There's no right or wrong with a lot of this and it does come down to preferences, but cork is one that I personally love, and it gives the guys that do love it an option. That extra crispness makes working a larger top water noticeably easier. It's rated to 35g but in reality it's a 30g rod, and that's the honest way to read it. Top waters up to about 20g are no trouble at all, and the same goes for plugs and shads into the low to mid twenties, which covers nearly everything you'd want for general bass fishing. From a saltwater perspective and the bass fishing we tend to do, a 50g rating makes it a great rod for fishing either with a big shad or a slightly bigger metal lure, or even just having that little bit of extra stiffness for really bringing back a slightly larger popper or topwater lure or something like that. It's one that's really well suited to rougher conditions as well, because you've just got that little bit of extra poke when the wind gets up. Not being the longest rod in the world actually means that it's quite useful sometimes on some of the rock marks we fish as well, where a longer rod can just get in the way behind you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eObviously that said, for a 50g rated rod they're so physically light, and the tip is such that you can still fish quite a light lure on them as well. Where it earns its place is shallow water where you don't want a heavy lure but you do want the distance, or up on a mark where you're stood a bit above the water. If you're regularly in the surf and in rougher conditions then the 98 in this range is the one for that. And the grip on the Crimsons is lovely, nicely laid out with the rear section a good length. It isn't a rod I'd use on calmer days, and it isn't overly stiff either. The rating is one I've always loved, because it means you can fish pretty much any metal we'd ever need from the shore. If you're reaching for 40g the conditions have to be absolutely mad, and most of what we actually use is nearer 30, which is where this one sits happiest. It'll cast a metal a very long way, and because the range isn't ridiculously fast in the action you can wind a bit of power into it and really launch one. There's enough poke for the bigger shads too. Tailwalk build a few models that are clearly aimed more at Europe than at their home market, and this is one of them. At 8'3\" it's about the limit of what our boat lads would use, which makes it one of the few that genuinely works from either, and it's a lovely length for the more demanding conditions we get. The rating means you can put a big shad on and go, which is what it's for. Fish it more vertically and it'll take considerably more than the printed figure, because you're not casting it. Like the heavier models in the other ranges it gets double-leg guides and slightly larger guides throughout, which matters when a rod is getting banged about on a boat. What it isn't is stiff. I'm quite happy casting a 30g metal jig on one, but more than that and they do start to struggle. A lot of the fishing we do with these shorter rods is more within the estuaries, so a 35g rating isn't necessarily necessary, and the fact that it's more like a 30g rod gives you the lightness that you need. It's still plenty powerful enough for the heaviest lures we'd want in the estuary, and it'll cast a slightly lighter lure as well if you ever need it to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's an interesting rod because compared to the 90ML, which has the same ratings, this one is slightly lighter and slightly softer. That makes it a nice complementary rod rather than just a shorter version of the same thing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tip isn't too soft or anything like that. It's just a really nice regular fast action that'll work with pretty much any lure under about that 30g maximum. That said, 30g is more for a metal jig than a surface lure. Something like a Patchinko 140 would be a bit big for this one, but the 125 is well within the range of lures it's comfortable with. Anything like a weightless soft plastic and it's a lovely rod for that sort of thing, lighter diving plugs as well. So rare is it to find a genuine Japanese-style travel rod that I'd been waiting a long time for one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing a five-piece, this one packs down into what is a really small bag, considering it's actually a really professional quality bass fishing rod. 8'8\" has almost become the new cool length for bass rods and this is exactly that. The action and the fact that it's rated at 35g mean it's going to fish all of your normal bass lures lovely and easily, everything from a 10g unweighted plastic all the way up to a 30 or 35g metal even.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs with all travel rods, the extra joins do mean it's not quite as crisp or as responsive as the two-piece 86 or 90 in this range. But what makes this one so impressive is how close it gets, given the massively increased convenience of travelling with it. Extra joins always give a slightly softer action throughout, so it's not a super fast, super steely rod. Even so, it's right up there as a very good bass rod regardless of the fact that it's five-piece, and even if it was two-piece it would still compare very favourably with so many other rods.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey come supplied in a nylon case. It's a slightly interesting layout, but they've managed to get the five sections in there without them crushing each other, which is great. A heavy plastic on the end of a long heavy rod gets knackering, and this length keeps it workable while leaving the power there. Like the 83MH it gets the double-leg guides, so it's a more durable build. It isn't stiff or steely. You don't want a stiff powerful rod, because it'd be useless with a lighter lure, and this one isn't. I'd not want to go below about 20g most of the time, but from 20g up it does the lot, with the reserve for when the wind or the surf gets up. It's always been the ultimate all-rounder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you're not sure what to buy, it's just the safest bet. I've been saying in the shop for years, hand on heart, that this is the rod I'd take for myself. There are lighter rods in the range, so have a look at the 86 if you want to fish lighter lures, but no matter what your preference is overall, the chances are you're going to enjoy using the 90ML.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe action is not too stiff or too steely or anything like that. It's certainly responsive and fast, but not at a level where it becomes a problem, which is great because it means casting is always a joy and super easy with these. You can work any type of lure with them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGreat quality guides too, and what Tailwalk have done here is different to what you see a lot of people doing these days. There's a bit of a race on to make lighter and lighter rods, and one of the cheat's ways of doing that is to put smaller guides on. The Hi-Tide range has stuck to more sensibly sized ones. From a North Coast perspective it gives us just that little bit of extra power that sometimes we might need. Not every day of the week, but should the wind get up or the swell get up, having that extra little bit of power in the tank means you can always cope with the conditions should they gradually get worse. What we find more often than not is that actually the fish are there when it's rough, so a rod like this is a very commonly considered option.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA lot of that extra rating it has over the likes of the 35g 90ML isn't necessarily in the tip. It's more so in the butt. So you still have the lightness in the tip that you might sometimes need for fishing soft plastics, but then the extra power should you need to blast out a metal or something like that. This shouldn't be considered a powerful stiff rod. It's fast and responsive, but it's not stiff and steely, so it's actually a surprisingly delicate all-rounder that certainly has that power when you need it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe extra length means distance can certainly be improved, but it does more than that. It means you can stand above the water a little bit more safely, whilst also being able to keep the tip down and keep the line nearer the water, which is super important especially when you've got a little bit of a breeze blowing. In the surf it's the opposite: you can keep the line up and off the waves, or at least it gives you the movement to be able to move the rod and the line around. For our bass, this particular rod has become really interesting since we've started using it, and actually started changing the way that we fish to a certain extent within our estuaries especially. If you are fishing for example with creature baits, which has become a very popular thing to do in and around the estuaries, this is almost a rod that's designed for it literally. But the difference for us is that when you're catching bass, potentially some of the bigger fish that we catch are in our estuaries, so we do need this level of power. You've got the power to land these fish and haul them out of the weed, but the sensitivity to fish all of the lures and feel every little pluck of the bites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe handle itself is actually quite an interesting one.
